What Dynamics 365 F&O is built to handle

F&O is the right ERP when scale, regulatory complexity, and process depth all apply at once.

Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, deployed together, form the platform most people still call F&O. It runs general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, budgeting, cash and bank, consolidations, and tax across multiple legal entities and currencies. The financial dimensions framework lets you analyse the same ledger by cost centre, department, project, or any combination, without bolting on a separate reporting cube. For groups that operate across borders, intercompany accounting and elimination are part of the standard product.

On the operations side, F&O covers procurement and sourcing, inventory and warehouse management, production control for discrete, process, and lean manufacturing, master planning, and asset management. Warehouse mobile workflows run on the Warehouse Management app. This is enterprise ERP, not mid-market: the data model, the security surface, and the configuration depth are all built for organisations with complex multi-site operations and hundreds or thousands of users, which is precisely why a disciplined implementation matters.

Stakeholder interviews, current-state assessment, and a fit-gap analysis against standard F&O functionality. We output a fixed-price proposal with scope, a phased timeline, the integration inventory, and the acceptance criteria each later phase will be measured against.

Solution and data architecture, the financial dimension and legal entity model, the role-based security and segregation-of-duties design, integration design, and a customisation disposition catalogue. The deliverable is a signed-off functional design document.

Build

Configuration across all in-scope modules, X++ extension development, integration build including dual-write, and data migration pipelines. Work runs in agile sprints with bi-weekly demonstrations against real business scenarios using a conference-room-pilot approach.

Validate

User acceptance testing scripted from business processes, defect triage, parallel-run reconciliation of the general ledger, performance testing, and the FastTrack go-live readiness review with Microsoft’s solution assessment.

Living with One Version and the release waves

F&O is continuously serviced. The implementation choices you make decide whether that is routine or painful.

Microsoft ships F&O on a One Version model: monthly service updates and two major release waves a year, in spring and autumn. You cannot opt out indefinitely, and you can pause an update only a limited number of times. An estate built the wrong way, with over-layered code or customisations that touch standard objects directly, turns every wave into a regression project. An estate built on extensions, event handlers, and chain-of-command treats updates as a controlled, testable event.

A greenfield F&O implementation typically runs 26 to 52 weeks depending on the number of legal entities, the module scope, the volume of integrations, and how much customisation is genuinely needed. AX-to-F&O upgrades usually run 20 to 36 weeks. These are planning ranges. A real timeline and a fixed-price proposal are confirmed only after a discovery workshop and fit-gap analysis.
Business Central serves small and mid-market organisations, broadly under a few hundred users, with a simpler data model and AL extensions. Dynamics 365 F&O is built for enterprises with complex multi-entity finance, consolidations, advanced manufacturing and warehousing, and large user counts. F&O uses X++ extensions and a deeper configuration surface. The right choice depends on operational complexity, not just headcount, and we advise on it during discovery.
Yes. We upgrade both AX 2009 and AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 F&O.
